ROADSTER HORSES -

About Us
The Norfolk Roadster is probably the best, most influential road horse ever known. It is also known as the Norfolk Trotter, and it forms the foundation for most of the existing trotting horse breeds. It is almost guaranteed that it had the same ancestors as the Suffolk Punch. This cobby horse, traceable back to the 15th century, was developed in the flatlands of Norfolk. It was bred to be a strong, smart, short-legged, and tireless fast-trotting horse for use either in harness or for riding. It was mainly used for sustained trotting in light harness and under saddle.  They were also often used to carry farmers, with their wives riding pillion. For over four hundred years, until the advent of the railroad, the Norfolk Roadster provided an unbeatable mode of long distance, high speed transportation.
By the last half of the 20th century, the Norfolk Roadster's numbers were extremely low, and the breed almost became extinct until a few enthusiasts gathered together suitable individuals of the Norfolk Roadster type and genes, and began to breed them again.

Our horses are bred for multipurpose pursuits. Based on the belief that our customers' needs are varied and limitless. We are committed to meeting those needs. As a result, we base our stud on creating a general purpose riding horse. Our Stud was named Roadster as we started off with Standardbreds but decided that by using other breeds of horse over Standardbred mares we could produce a more versatile saddle horse with the standardbred temperment, toughness and trainability.

We are preservation breeders of the coloured Roan Standardbred with the purchase of a roan colt from New Zealand in 2010. The racing industry breeds for speed not colour and they are slowly dissappearing as new and faster bloodlines are being produced. Standardbreds dont have to be just racehorses. They can do anything else a saddlebred horse can do. If you are interested in standardbreds as a riding horse then talk to us as we are purpose breeding standardbreds for riding. This means that They are being bred for comfort, not speed. Our Standardbreds are being selected for a more compact body and a level wither and croup. Many Standardbreds have a higher croup than their wither, which is great for rear end thrust when racing but proves very difficult when trying to fit a saddle for riding. They are also being bred for a smaller and neater head. We are breeding cross breds and purebreds.

Vanessa has a Certificate IV in Horse Management (Melbourne University) and has recently acquired her A.I. Technicians Certificate (Goulburn Valley Equine Veterinary Clinic). She has a lot of experience with horses and has just qualified and competed in the 100 mile National Endurance Championships, known as "The Tom Quilty", coming a respectable 58th out of 193 riders. Not bad for her first attempt.
